Playing in front of a home crowd was a definite boost for the Cobourg Police Association Northumberland Breakers 14U Girls as they topped all 10 teams in the Ontario Volleyball Association Challenge Cup (Zone F) on Saturday taking home the gold medal!

Competing against teams from Ottawa, Kingston, Peterborough and Oshawa as well as their sister team, the Van Vark Electric Breakers stretched the girls to their limits as both the semi-final and the gold medal match went three games.

The day started well for the C.P.A. Breakers as they handily won their first two matches 25-15, 17 against the Kingston Cats and 25-10, 16 against the Kingston Pegasus Wings. Strong serving was the key to winning both matches.

The third match of the day saw the Breakers pitted against a higher seed, the Ottawa Maverick Revolvers. Dropping the first game 22-25 the girls rebounded with a stronger effort and took the second game 25-12 placing the team tops in their pool and earning a bye to the quarter-finals that afternoon.

After a quick win over Ottawa Fusion Purple 25-12, 13 the Breakers were in the medal round and up against some stiff competition. The semi-final saw the girls take the first set off Peterborough Thunder 25-17 before dropping the second to a refocused Thunder 15-25. In the deciding third set the Breakers started quick and kept the lead earning a berth in the gold medal match with a 15-9 victory.

Making the final accomplished the goal the team had set for itself at the start of the day – get a medal. Now the only detail left to decide was whether the first medal for this team in OVA competition would be gold or silver.

From the start of the final it was evident the Breakers wanted gold. They served well, passed well and played defense well taking the first set 25-12 from the Ottawa Maverick Gold Diggers. Another set won and the girls would not only get gold but would also move up to the top Division in the province for their next tournament. Starting the second set the Gold Diggers showed they weren’t giving up and taking charge they took the second set 25-21. With momentum on the side of the Ottawa team it was imperative that the Breakers start well in the deciding set of the day. And that they did, riding a quick start to a 15-5 win and the gold medal.

Both the athletes and their supporters were tired but happy after a long day of volleyball. With Christmas around the corner the Breakers next see OVA action in early February, hopefully at home again at the CCC.
